I used Concept Coach in a previous semester. How do I use it again for a new semester?
If you have piloted OpenStax Concept Coach in the past, follow the steps in our Faculty Getting Started Guide for instructions on how to set up your courses for a new semester.
How do I see the questions used in Concept Coach?
When you sign up to pilot Concept Coach and create your account, you will be able to view all questions for your book in the question library. If you do not have a Concept Coach account, you can view sample questions for each book here.
How do faculty set up Concept Coach?
Click here to access our step-by-step Faculty Getting Started Guide for instructions on how to complete your account set-up.
How do students set up Concept Coach?
Students need to get their enrollment code from their professors to get started. Concept Coach will provide a customized message that instructors send to students, including the Concept Coach book URL, enrollment code, and instructions. Students can also easily find their Concept Coach book via the Student Portal.

See the Student Getting Started Guide for more information.

What is the benefit for faculty?
Faculty will have a simple way to expose students to new questions from topics recently covered in their course, as well as automatic, spaced review so students can review topics they’ve learned in the past. The system automatically integrates cognitive science principles to help students learn and retain knowledge, without any additional effort on your part.
What is the benefit for students?
Concept Coach incorporates proven cognitive science principles — spaced practice, retrieval practice, and feedback — which have been shown to improve student comprehension and long-term retention. Students using Concept Coach will have access to high-quality practice questions and an easy way to review what they have previously learned.
What is “spaced retrieval” and how does it work?
As students read, they will be asked questions both about their current content and about previous sections they have completed. Concept Coach will serve groups of questions from previously covered material at intervals throughout the semester. This spaced practice is a proven cognitive science principle that helps increase long-term retention of material.
How many questions does Concept Coach assign to students?
The pilot version will deliver groups of 3-5 questions per section to students. Each group of Concept Coach questions will contain questions from the most recent section as well as spaced practice questions drawn from previously assigned sections.
Can I write my own questions and assign those in Concept Coach? Can I edit the questions in Concept Coach?
The pilot version of Concept Coach will not enable you to create or edit question content. However, based on feedback from the Spring 2016 pilot, instructors will now be able to view all questions in the question library, where you can exclude any questions that you do not want your students to receive.
What about single sign-on (SSO) and learning tools interoperability (LTI)? Does Concept Coach integrate with my learning management system (e.g. Blackboard)?
This is the goal. We do not have these features ready yet, but in the interim, we are focusing on making this system as simple to use and set up as possible. Based on feedback from the Spring 2016 pilot, Concept Coach now offers an assignments list page with links to every section, so instructors can easily copy the link for the section they want to assign and paste it into their CMS or syllabi. Concept Coach provides instructors with enrollment codes to give their students, which will enroll students in the correct sections of Concept Coach when they create their accounts. Instructors can then export scores and participation from Concept Coach into a spreadsheet to input into their gradebook.
Can I use Concept Coach if I don’t cover every section in a chapter?
Sure. Concept Coach will only ask questions based on the assignments that each student has worked on; it will not serve questions for unassigned sections.
Can I use Concept Coach if I use a custom book?
At this time, Concept Coach is only available in the six Concept Coach-enabled books: Biology (for majors), Concepts of Biology (for non-majors), College Physics, Principles of Economics, Introduction to Sociology 2e, and Anatomy and Physiology.
Does Concept Coach meet ADA accessibility guidelines?
Yes. Both the OpenStax website and the pilot of Concept Coach released in January 2016, along with all future versions of Concept Coach, will be in compliance with ADA accessibility guidelines.
Does Concept Coach protect student data? Will it require any information protected by FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)?
OpenStax doesn’t require that your school disclose any individual, FERPA-protected information to participate in Concept Coach. Concept Coach does collect certain usage data from faculty and student users in order to provide our cognitive science-based learning tool. This data collection is covered in our standard Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which are available to read and accept when you create your Concept Coach account. We don’t sell any of the data that we receive or that users generate, and we don’t advertise to students.
